As a college educator, I design active, guided-discovery learning experiences so that students develop habits of effective thinking and communication. Math is an ideal sandbox in which students learn to carefully organize their minds by playing with highly technical objects.

The content of each course is mathematical, but the skills mastered apply to any profession; a student may never need to use calculus after college, but they will need to present and defend their ideas in a clear, concise, and logical manner. As we enter the era of Big Data, students must be able to draw correct inferences from data, graphs, and statistics. These are the skills students will use and remember long after they've forgotten how to take a derivative.

The pedogical style I employ is known as Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), Active Learning, or Guided Discovery Learning. In an IBL course, students discover and communicate the important ideas. Rather than walk a well-worn path laid before them by a textbook, students are given just a few stepping stones and must build the path themselves. This type of learning emphasizes creativity and communication, builds student confidence, and facilitates greater content retention.

The effective thinking and communication skills I emphasize in the classroom are the same skills I employ daily in mathematical research. My research program investigates topological, algebraic, and geometric methods in the study of 3 and 4 dimensional spaces and the study of knots. I attempt to clarify our understanding of these fields by finding relationships between the objects within them. Many of the objects involved are combinatorial in nature and open questions exist that are appropriate for student investigation.
