Teaching
Math Education Research Assistant:
During the spring 2005 semester I worked with
Prof David Kirshner from Louisiana State University on an evaluation study of the lab component of the Calculus II course (Math 132) at Washington University. Prof Kirshner is a math education professor at LSU and as his evaluation assistant I learned a great deal about the principles and methods of mathematical instruction.
As part of this assignment, I interviewed 15 students at length about their understanding of exponential growth and decay and wrote assessment reports for each interview. Prof Kirshner taught me how to carefully word questions so as to identify student understanding or misunderstanding of a specific math concept.
This project taught me that teaching is more than just reciting a polished lecture. A teacher must be able to identify weaknesses in understanding and adjust quickly to new realities in the classroom.
